Do Division Street Fest–Next Weekend!! June 5th & 6th

Do Division is my favorite fest of the year!!  I can walk to it which is awesome but I think the street and existing shops lend themselves particularly well to the event. There are plenty of places to pop a squat (sit down) when you need to take a break to enjoy a funnel cake or indulge in some people watching. Not to mention that there is always great music–my daughter was showing off her dance moves last year in front of the pawn shop where someone happened to sit down at a set of drums and started jamming.  🙂

Oh, and after the heat today, one of those fabulous pina coladas in the real pineapple sounds fabulous! The sidewalk sale and vendors are also great. We generally stick to the more grown-up aspects of the event but there is also a wonderful kid section at Hoyne that is open from noon till 6. The fest itself goes till 10pm and is on Division from Ashland to Leavitt. Hope to see you there!

Electronics Recycling this Saturday–1st Ward

I don’t know about you but I have at least two places in my house where I store electronic pieces parts that I’m sure at one time, I knew what they were. Ive also got the odd collection of unused alarm clocks, radios, corded phones etc. Don’t even get me started on the various cords and cables that I have NO idea what they belong to.  Well, now we have the perfect opportunity to do a little housecleaning!

This Saturday morning, May 29th, the First Ward is sponsoring a household electronics curbside pick-up service. You may put any unwanted electronic devices in front of your home and visible to the street by 8:00 a.m. this Saturday. The devices will be collected and safely disposed of between 8:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.

Alternatively, you can take unwanted electronic devices to the 1st Ward Streets and Sanitation Ward Yard at 2505 W. Grand Avenue.

2010 Chicago World Cup Soccer Festival

My favorite sport is football–as in American football. I LOVE it. Since I have lived all over the country I can’t always watch “my” team but I watch whatever game happens to be on. Some say that makes me a fair weather fan but others say that it makes me a true football fan, not just of a team, but of the sport itself. I like that description better. 🙂

Most of the world however, considers football to be the sport played primarily with your feet–i.e. American soccer. It’s slowly gaining more and more recognition here, helped not in small part by the highly visible and notable celebrity personalities that are not only great athletes but help shine a spotlight not only on themselves but on their sport as well.  As I always say, anything that expands my universe has got be a good thing, if it also happens to be a lot of fun, all the better!

I recently sent out a list of some of the summer festivals Chicago is so well known for and a kind reader shared with me a couple that I overlooked. So who/what is Chicago World Cup? According to their press release:

ChicagoWorldCup LLC has gathered the international communities of Chicago for popular events such
as the Chicago World Cup adult soccer tournament and Chicago French Bastille Day Festival every year since
2006. In 2010, the Chicago World Cup launched EthniCity Soccer, the first-ever national adult amateur world
cup soccer tournament in the United States. EthniCity is targeting 33 million members of the expat and
international communities and 17 million soccer players and fans in the U.S. to take part in the competition and
this year’s celebrations. ChicagoWorldCup LLC’s objectives are to help integrate foreign and expat communities
in the U.S.; to support development and practice of amateur soccer in North America; to support the U.S. bid to
host the 2018/2022 FIFA World Cup; and to support the U.S. team during the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
